Here's something you might not have known. It's not a good idea to play with your pet's poop. So tell your children that they should "avoid contact with rodent feces." Oh, wait, it only says you should tell your children that if they are "unable to reliably wash their hands." Okay. So if they are good at washing their hands, can they play with it all they want?

Fight over finger found in custard

This is really bizarre. A food worker lost his finger in a custard mixing machine. Someone found the finger in his custard, but refused to give it back. He left the dessert shop with the finger and said his lawyers would be contacting them, thereby eliminating the possibility of reattaching the finger.

Hindi Blog

I just started a Hindi Blog. Check it out and let me know if you can read the font. I'm using the unicode Hindi font, so Safari should be able to display it properly. I tried to view it with Internet Explorer, but it didn't seem to work.

If you are working on transcription of audio or video material, check out Transana. This program "provides a way to view video or play audio recordings, create a transcript, and link places in the transcript to frames in the video." And much more. They have a PC version, and I just signed up for the alpha test of the Mac version.

Website Makeover

I have added one new song, but more importantly I have given my website a total makeover! Will this be the last makeover? Not likely. But I'm happy with the look for now.

New Songs added

I have added a couple of new songs to my website. Two are women's songs for the wedding. The other is not really a song, but a joke told by kurkuriya drummers during a wedding performance.

I'm starting to get better at working with html, but now that my website is starting to get bigger, it is getting a bit confusing to keep everything organized.

Soon I am going to work on adding pictures!

The Slaying of Meghanada

I'm spending the day writing a review of Clinton Seely's translation of Meghanadavadha Kavya by Michael Madhusudan Dutt. It's for the UT Ethnic and Third World Literature Review

Seely provides an excellent introduction, and I find his translation to be wonderful. Take this, the introduction to the second canto:

The sun set, and Twilight appeared--a gem upon her brow.
Night-blooming lotuses now blossomed; in ponds the wan-faced
lotuses of day closed fast their eyes; warbling birds returned
to nests; and cattle, lowing, shambled toward their cow sheds. With
the moon and her radiant stars came Night, smiling. Flirting,
fragrant breezes, blustering about--to all they whispered
sweetly, "What riches did you win kissing which of several
flowers"? The goddess Sleep arrived. And, as tired children

Okay, my website is officiall up and running . . . but it's not much to look at yet. I have discovered that this most important part of making a website is not figuring out how to make it look cool, but actually figuring out what the content should be.

I want to use the site to publish some of my research online: song texts, photographs, things like that. This will be a really good excuse to scan all my fieldwork photos into my computer. I also want to digitize all my recordings, but there isn't enough room on my hard drive for that: I only have 2G left, and I have over 200 hours of recording. Time to get an external hard drive?

I want an ipod

This is me testing out my blog. Let me take this time to tell the world about this new cool thing I just found about. It's called an "ipod." It's a little white box and you can put lots of songs in it. You plug in your cool little earbud phones, and then you listen to your music. Doesn't that sound neat? I think it will become pretty popular. Especially since you can get socks for them. I kid you not. Socks. When I find out how to put hyperlinks in this blog, I can put in a link to a picture of Shawn's blue sock, which one of his friends just bought him an "ipod" for.

Speaking of "hyperlinks" and stuff like that. I just today started learning html. Yup. I even made a website, which, so far, only I can see. But it's not that interesting yet, so don't feel too left out. It's just my resume. But it does have three links in it, and they work. Fabulous. I'm totally on my way.
